Middle earth was modeled after rural England. Tolkein was resentful that England had no home grown mythology. All the mythology of England is imported from France or Normandy. He deliberately designed Middle Earth to be England's mythology as a relief of this woeful lack.

The map of Middle Earth a ctually bears no geographic resemblance to any known place on Earth. The book 'The Simarillion' disposed of the geographic issues in the latter stories by 'walling off' the entire world from any intrusion.

And Middle Earth shall be walled off until the end of the Latter Ages. On a basic plot level, the Lord of the Rings is about a powerful Lord who managed to turn much of what was truly weak human will into an incredible ability to fight and destroy everything positive in his world. The plot of the story is how brave individuals sought to turn the tide and bring about th at Lord's doom. Tolkein called his books 'applicable' as opposed to 'allegorical' meaning that there is no set thematic meaning to the book and its story can be applied in parts or in whole to worldwide occurrences that are different to different people. There are strong themes about the value of diversity, teamwork, the environment, humility, valiance, and hopefulness. At the same time the book gives a harsh critique of industrialism, homogeneity, hegemony, discrimination, and belligerence.
The lord of the rings is about a hobbit called Frodo who was givena ring that held so much power that many evil people wanted it.Frodo had to destroy the ring in the one place that it could bedestroyed, Mount Doom in Mordor. The title of the novel 'Lord of the Rings' refers to the story's main antagonist, the Dark Lord Sauron, who had in an earlier age created the One Ring to rule the other Rings of Power as the ultimate weapon in his campaign to conquer and rule all of Middle-earth. From quiet beginnings in the Shire, a Hobbit land not unlike the English countryside, the story ranges across north-west Middle-earth, following the course of the War of the Ring through the eyes of its characters, notably the Hobbits Frodo Baggins, Samwise 'Sam' Gamgee, Meriadoc 'Merry' Brandybuck and Peregrin 'Pippin' Took, but also the Hobbits' chief allies and travelling companions: Aragorn, a Human Ranger, Boromir, a Human nobleman, Gimli, a Dwarf warrior, Legolas, an Elven prince, and Gandalf, a Wizard. Three rings for Elven kings under the sky; Seven for Dwarf Lords in their halls of stone; Nine for mortal men, doomed to die; One for the dark lord on his dark throne. In the Land of Mordor where the Shadows lie. One ring to rule them all, one ring to find them. One ring to bring them all and in the darkness bind them. In the land of Mordor where the shadows lie. So in total there are 20 Rings of Power! At the time of the Lord of the Rings, the elves still have theirthree rings and keep them in hiding (Gandalf, Elrond, and Galadrielbear them), the dwarf rings were all long ago destroyed by dragonfire, the rings for men are still held by the nine men that Sauronoriginally gave them to and they have been fully corrupted by theirrings becoming the nazgul, and the one ring is in the possession ofthe hobbits (Bilbo, Frodo, and Samwise in succession).
So at the actual time of the Lord of the Rings story only 13Rings of Power still exist. There are 20. Three Rings for the Elven-kings under the sky, Seven for the Dwarf-lords in their halls of stone, Ninefor Mortal Men doomed to die, One for the Dark Lord on hisdark throne In the Land of Mordor where the Shadows lie. One Ring to rule them all. One Ring to find them, OneRing to bring them all and in the darkness bind them In theLand of Mordor where the Shadows lie. However at the time of the story itself only 13 remain, as theseven dwarf rings had long before been destroyed by dragon fire.
Tolkien is a hard dude to live up to. Even his friend Lewis does a terrible job of writing fiction in comparison. Tolkien has such a complete vision of the workings of his world, and I think the beauty of LOTR is that though the series is the best-known of his works and is incredibly detaile d, it's provides only a shallow understanding of Middle Earth. I think his approach to LOTR was to create it as an epic tale in itself but not to try and encapsulate an entire world within it, which is the way epic tales are woven into the fabric of our society.
Also impressive is the fact that Tolkien's extensive knowledge of linguistics allowed him to create Elvish as an original language. If I were trying to live up to LOTR, I'd begin with The Silmarillion, Unfinished Tales, and anything else you see fit, and basically understand the construction of his works. Pastiche if you need to, that's a great way to understand an author's approach to his writing.
